Egyptian Cotton Towels: Modern and Luxurious

Egyptian Cotton Towels

The luxury afforded by Egyptian cotton towels is a relatively new phenomenon. Historians wonder how much towels were even used prior to indoor plumbing and modern mechanized manufacturing techniques. The few towels that are found from relatively recent Victorian times are small and found with the wash basins that were used for grooming by most people. This implies that the large, fluffy towels loved by bathers today may not have been used much back then. The modern towel, woven to be extra absorbent because of additional loops of cotton fiber, originated from the work of Turkish rug weavers in the mountain village of Babadag during the 15th century. Prior to this time, towels were woven flat and had no loops of fiber. The Turkish-style towel has become the world’s standard style, just as Egyptian cotton and Egyptian cotton towels have become the standard of quality.
